How fast is the SpaceX Starlink network? Download 1 movie in less than 1 minute

by Tesla Color on August 08, 2021
On August 8, Speedtest, a well-known testing website, recently reported that the Internet speed of SpaceX Starlink satellite Internet has reached a new level, which is almost comparable to fixed broadband. Even in some countries, Starlink's Internet speeds are faster than fixed broadband.

Starlink is SpaceX's satellite Internet project. From 2019 to 2024, SpaceX plans to spend five years sending the thousands of satellites needed to form the network into near-Earth orbit to form a space-based network capable of providing Internet services. Currently, SpaceX has launched more than 1,650 satellites into orbit.

Speedtest reported that in the second quarter of this year, the average download speed of the Starlink satellite Internet service in the U.S. market was 97.23 Mbps, which is not far from the average download speed of 115.22 Mbps for fixed broadband in the United States.

Generally speaking, at a download speed of 100 Mbps, users can download 1 movie in 1 minute. In addition, the upload speed of the U.S. Starlink network is 13.89 Mbps, slightly lower than the 17.18 Mbps of fixed broadband.

The SpaceX Starlink network is well ahead of its competitors in both download and upload speeds. Other satellite broadband services in the U.S. market are far behind, such as HughesNet and Viasat, with HughesNet, for example, offering download speeds of only 19.73 Mbps and upload speeds of only 2.43 Mbps.

In markets such as Canada, New Zealand and the UK, Starlink Internet services are much faster than fixed broadband. In Canada, the average download speed for Starlink Internet in the second quarter of this year was 86.92 Mbps, compared to 84.24 Mbps for fixed broadband.

In New Zealand, the average download speed for Starlink Internet was 127.02 Mbps, compared to 78.85 Mbps for fixed broadband. upload speeds were nearly identical, both around 23 Mbps. In the UK, the average download speed for Starlink Internet is 108.30 Mbps, compared to 50.14 Mbps for fixed broadband.

In late October 2020, SpaceX was the first to launch a test service for Starlink Internet in the United States. The service is priced at $99 per month, while users will also need to pay $499 for other ancillary equipment, including terminal reception equipment, tripods and Wifi routers.

SpaceX revealed late last month that the number of subscribers to its Starlink satellite Internet service is approaching 100,000. In addition, Starlink has more than 500,000 orders worldwide.
